James Yonge (translator)

James Yonge (fl. late 14th century) was an Irish cleric, notary, and translator. He is primarily known for his Middle English translations of several works of classical literature, notably the Secretum Secretorum (also known as The Governance of Princes) attributed to Aristotle, and the Siege of Troy which is a prose rendition of Guido delle Colonne's Historia Destructionis Troiae.

Little is known about Yonge's personal life. He is believed to have been born in Dublin and likely held a position within the Dublin ecclesiastical hierarchy. His translations suggest a fluency in Latin and French, and a considerable knowledge of classical history and literature. His patrons appear to have been members of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy in Ireland.

Yonge's translations are significant for providing access to classical learning for English readers during the late medieval period. They were circulated in manuscript form and likely influenced subsequent English writers. While the translations are not always strictly accurate, they offer valuable insight into the transmission and interpretation of classical texts in medieval England and Ireland.
