Powell River (Tennessee River tributary)
The Powell River is a 114-mile-long (183 km) tributary of the Clinch River, which is itself a major tributary of the Tennessee River. The river flows through southwestern Virginia and northeastern Tennessee. Its headwaters are located in Wise County, Virginia, and it flows generally southwest, crossing the state line into Tennessee before joining the Clinch River near Clinton, Tennessee.
The Powell River valley is a significant agricultural and recreational area. The river has played a role in the history of the region, supporting early settlements and industries. The river's name honors Ambrose Powell, a member of Daniel Boone's exploration party that passed through the area in the late 18th century.
The Powell River is known for its diverse aquatic life, though it has faced challenges from pollution and habitat degradation over the years. Conservation efforts are ongoing to improve water quality and protect the river's ecosystem. The river is popular for fishing and canoeing, particularly in its upper reaches.
