Dale Roberts (footballer, born 1986)

Dale Roberts (22 March 1986 – 14 December 2010) was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper.

Born in Horden, County Durham, Roberts began his career as a youth player at Middlesbrough before moving to Nottingham Forest. He did not make a first-team appearance for either club. He subsequently joined Eastwood Town, and then Alfreton Town.

Roberts joined Rushden & Diamonds in 2008, quickly establishing himself as the first-choice goalkeeper. He made over 100 appearances for the club. He earned England C international recognition during his time at Rushden & Diamonds, representing the team twice.

Roberts's career was tragically cut short when he took his own life in December 2010, following a period of depression stemming from an affair between his then-fiancée and his Rushden & Diamonds teammate, Paul Terry (brother of John Terry). His death led to widespread grief within the football community and raised awareness of mental health issues within the sport. Tributes were paid to Roberts at numerous football matches following his death. His legacy continues to be associated with efforts to promote mental health awareness and support for footballers.
