Arthur Butler (bishop)

Arthur Butler (1844-1929) was an Anglican bishop and educator. He served as the Bishop of Trinidad from 1904 to 1924.

Born on November 20, 1844, Butler was educated at Brighton College and Exeter College, Oxford, where he obtained a degree in Classics. He was ordained a deacon in 1868 and a priest in 1869. Before his appointment to the episcopate, he held various positions, including curate of St. Mark's, Lakenham, Norwich, and headmaster of Clapham Grammar School (1874-1894) and Haileybury College (1894-1904).

As Bishop of Trinidad, Butler was involved in the expansion of the church in the diocese and focused on improving education. He oversaw the establishment of new schools and worked to enhance the quality of existing ones. He also promoted the training of local clergy.

Butler resigned his see in 1924 and retired to England. He died on April 15, 1929. He was married to Harriet Jemima, daughter of the Rev. Arthur Rawson, and they had several children. His publications include sermons and addresses relating to education and religious matters.
