John Kent (Newfoundland politician)

John Kent (1805 – 1872) was a Newfoundland politician and the second Premier of Newfoundland. Born in St. John's, Newfoundland, he was a prominent figure in the early development of responsible government on the island.

Kent trained as a lawyer and entered Newfoundland politics in the 1830s. He became a vocal advocate for responsible government, arguing that the elected assembly should have control over the executive branch. He was a key figure in the Reform Party.

He served as Premier of Newfoundland from 1858 to 1861. His premiership was marked by political and religious tensions, particularly between Catholics and Protestants. These divisions eventually led to his government's collapse.

Kent resigned as Premier in 1861. He continued to be involved in Newfoundland politics until his death in 1872. He is remembered as an important advocate for responsible government and a significant figure in Newfoundland history.
