Naomi (Hebrew: נָעֳמִי, transliterated Noʻamî, meaning "pleasant" or "my pleasantness") is a significant female character in the Book of Ruth in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Life and Story

Naomi, originally from Bethlehem in Judah, married Elimelech and they had two sons, Mahlon and Chilion. Due to a famine in Judah, the family migrated to Moab. Tragedy struck when Elimelech died, leaving Naomi a widow. Later, both her sons married Moabite women – Orpah and Ruth. Further misfortune followed with the deaths of Mahlon and Chilion, leaving Naomi alone with her daughters-in-law.

Naomi, heartbroken and despairing, decided to return to Bethlehem. She urged Orpah and Ruth to return to their own people and families. Orpah ultimately complied, but Ruth famously declared her unwavering loyalty to Naomi, stating, "Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God."
