Gérard Blitz (entrepreneur)

Gérard Blitz (1912 – 1990) was a Belgian entrepreneur, best known as the founder of Club Méditerranée. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, he was also a noted water polo player, representing Belgium in four Olympic Games (1936, 1948, 1952, and 1956) and winning a bronze medal in 1936.

Blitz conceived the idea for Club Méditerranée after observing post-war social needs for affordable and carefree vacations. In 1950, he established the first Club Méditerranée village on the island of Mallorca, Spain. Initially, the concept revolved around simple canvas tents and communal living, promoting a spirit of freedom and escape from the stresses of modern life.

His initial concept emphasized simplicity and affordability, catering to a clientele seeking a respite from the complexities of post-war life. The early Club Med villages offered basic amenities but focused on community and activities, with an emphasis on outdoor pursuits and social interaction. This model proved popular, leading to the rapid expansion of Club Méditerranée in the subsequent decades.

Blitz played a significant role in shaping the company's philosophy and direction during its formative years. He emphasized values such as informality, conviviality, and a connection with nature. He eventually transitioned management to Gilbert Trigano, who scaled up Club Méditerranée into a global tourism enterprise. While Blitz’s initial vision was more idealistic and community-driven, Trigano successfully commercialized the concept, transforming Club Med into a well-known international brand.

Beyond Club Méditerranée, Blitz was involved in other entrepreneurial ventures. His legacy remains primarily tied to his innovative approach to tourism and leisure, contributing significantly to the development of the all-inclusive vacation concept.
