Skyward (novel)
Skyward is a young adult science fiction novel written by Brandon Sanderson, published in 2018. It is the first book in the Skyward series.
The novel follows Spensa Nightshade, a teenager living on the planet Detritus. Detritus is constantly under attack by an alien race known as the Krell, who drove humanity from the stars and forced them to live underground. Spensa dreams of becoming a pilot and fighting the Krell, like her father did before he was branded a coward and killed. However, she faces significant prejudice and obstacles due to her father's legacy.
The story revolves around Spensa's enrollment in the Defiant Defense Force flight academy, her relationship with a mysterious alien starfighter she calls "M-Bot," and her efforts to prove herself and uncover the truth about her father's past and the nature of the Krell. Key themes explored in Skyward include overcoming prejudice, finding one's identity, the importance of hope in the face of adversity, and questioning established truths.
The novel is known for its fast-paced action, compelling characters, and intricate world-building, characteristic of Sanderson's writing style. It combines elements of space opera with a coming-of-age narrative. It was followed by sequels Starsight (2020), Cytonic (2021), and Defiant (2023).
