Reg Birch

Reg Birch (1918 – 2005) was a British trade unionist, engineer, and communist politician. He is most notable for serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for West Bromwich for just over three years, from 1966 to 1970, as a Labour candidate.

Born Reginald Alfred Birch, he worked as a toolmaker and engineer. Birch became a prominent figure within the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU), known for his staunchly left-wing views. He was a leading member of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) during his time in Parliament, despite sitting as a Labour MP. This dual affiliation was a point of considerable controversy.

Birch's political positions were highly critical of the Labour government's policies, particularly regarding economic management and industrial relations. He often voted against the government and voiced his opposition to wage restraint measures. His outspokenness frequently put him at odds with the Labour Party leadership and led to calls for his expulsion.

After losing his seat in the 1970 general election, Birch continued his involvement in trade union activities and remained an active member of the CPGB until its dissolution. He remained a controversial figure known for his unwavering commitment to his socialist principles and his often confrontational approach to politics.
