Barkeria

Barkeria is a genus of epiphytic orchids native to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. These orchids are characterized by their slender, cane-like pseudobulbs, often clustered, and their relatively short-lived but numerous flowers.

Description:

Barkeria orchids typically lack leaves during their flowering period. Their pseudobulbs are often elongated and cylindrical, giving them a reed-like appearance. Flowers arise from the apex of the pseudobulbs or from the nodes. The flowers are often delicate, ranging in color from white and pink to lavender and purple.

Cultivation:

Barkeria are popular among orchid enthusiasts for their beauty and relatively ease of cultivation. They generally require bright, indirect light, excellent air circulation, and well-draining media, such as mounted on cork or tree fern slabs, or grown in open baskets with minimal potting mix. A distinct dry rest during the winter months is crucial for promoting flowering.

Taxonomy:

The genus Barkeria was established in 1838 by Knowles and Westcott. It is classified within the Laeliinae subtribe of the Orchidaceae family. Several species have been moved into and out of the genus over time, leading to some taxonomic confusion.

The genus includes a number of recognized species, including (but not limited to):
