2004 United States Olympic trials (track and field)

The 2004 United States Olympic Trials for track and field were held at Hornet Stadium on the campus of California State University, Sacramento in Sacramento, California, from July 9 to July 18, 2004. Organized by USA Track & Field (USATF), the ten-day competition determined the American team for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

The Trials featured competitions in all Olympic track and field events, including running, jumping, and throwing disciplines. Athletes competed for the top three spots in each event, which typically guaranteed selection to the Olympic team, provided they had also met the Olympic qualifying standard for that event. In some instances, athletes meeting the qualifying standard but finishing outside the top three could also be selected as part of the team, subject to USATF discretion, to fill team quotas or address specific strategic needs.

The event attracted thousands of athletes and spectators, and received extensive media coverage. Notable performances included world-leading marks and American records. The Trials were also subject to controversies related to athlete eligibility and doping, which affected the final composition of the Olympic team. Results from the competition are considered official records for USATF and are used for historical comparisons and athlete rankings.
