4th Air Wing (JASDF)

The 4th Air Wing (第4航空団, dai-yon koukudan) is a unit of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). It is primarily based at Matsushima Air Base in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The 4th Air Wing is best known for being the home of the Blue Impulse aerobatic demonstration team.

Organization:

The 4th Air Wing typically consists of the following units:

• 21st Fighter Training Squadron (第21飛行隊, dai-nijūichi hikōtai): Operates the T-4 jet trainer, used for pilot training and Blue Impulse displays.
• Matsushima Air Base Support Group (松島基地業務群, Matsushima Kichi Gyōmu-gun): Provides logistical and operational support to the wing.
• Other supporting units: Including air traffic control, maintenance, and security.

Role and Missions:

The primary mission of the 4th Air Wing is pilot training, specifically using the T-4 aircraft. This encompasses preparing pilots for advanced fighter aircraft operations. The Blue Impulse team, as part of the 21st Fighter Training Squadron, conducts public airshows and demonstrations to promote the JASDF and foster public relations. The Wing also plays a role in national defense, although this is secondary to its training mission.

History:

The 4th Air Wing has a long history of training pilots for the JASDF. Matsushima Air Base, its home, has been a significant aviation facility since before World War II. The Wing has undergone various organizational changes throughout its existence, adapting to the evolving needs of the JASDF. The Blue Impulse team has a particularly storied history, having performed at numerous national and international events.

Aircraft:

The main aircraft operated by the 4th Air Wing is the Kawasaki T-4 jet trainer. Historically, other aircraft may have been assigned to the wing as pilot training needs evolved.

Notable Events:

The 4th Air Wing and Matsushima Air Base were significantly impacted by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The tsunami severely damaged the base and destroyed several aircraft, including Blue Impulse planes. Reconstruction efforts were undertaken, and the Wing has since resumed its training and demonstration missions.
