338th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 338th Infantry Division was a German infantry division that fought during World War II. It was formed on November 16, 1940, as part of the 14th Wave (Welle) of mobilization.

Organization and Deployment:

Initially formed in Wehrkreis VI (Military District VI), the division spent much of its early existence in occupation duties in France. It was primarily stationed along the Atlantic Coast, particularly in the Brittany region. The division's mission was to defend against potential Allied landings and maintain internal security.

Eastern Front Service:

In late 1943, the 338th Infantry Division was transferred to the Eastern Front. It was deployed to the central sector, where it participated in defensive battles against the advancing Soviet forces. The division suffered heavy casualties during these engagements and underwent several reorganizations.

Combat and Retreat:

The 338th fought in various defensive positions throughout 1944 and 1945, including battles around Bobruisk and Minsk during the Soviet summer offensives. It experienced significant losses in manpower and equipment, constantly being forced to retreat westward.
