USS Farragut (DDG-37)
The USS Farragut (DDG-37) was a United States Navy guided missile destroyer, the lead ship of her class. Named for Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, a hero of the American Civil War, she was the third U.S. Navy ship to bear this name.
Farragut was commissioned in 1960 and served extensively throughout the Cold War. Her armament included anti-submarine rockets (ASROC), surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), and guns, making her a capable multi-mission warship. Throughout her career, she underwent numerous modernizations and upgrades to maintain her effectiveness in the face of evolving threats.
She participated in various exercises and deployments around the world, representing U.S. naval power and contributing to maritime security. Farragut earned several awards and commendations for her service.
The USS Farragut (DDG-37) was decommissioned in 1989 and subsequently scrapped. While no longer in service, her name lives on in later ships of the U.S. Navy, continuing the tradition of honoring Admiral Farragut's legacy. Her service record represents a significant chapter in naval history during the Cold War era.
