SM UB-76

SM UB-76 was a German Type UB III submarine, or U-boat, of the German Imperial Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. She was commissioned on July 22, 1917, under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Hans Werner Kraus.

UB-76 conducted several patrols, primarily operating in the English Channel and the Western Approaches. Her primary role was to disrupt Allied shipping lanes by attacking merchant vessels and troop transports.

On December 9, 1917, UB-76 torpedoed and sank the British armed merchant cruiser HMS Aragon in the Mediterranean Sea near Alexandria, Egypt. The sinking resulted in significant loss of life.

On February 9, 1918, while patrolling the English Channel, UB-76 was sunk by depth charges deployed by the British destroyer HMS Grasshopper. There were no survivors from UB-76.

UB-76 represents a significant example of German U-boat warfare during World War I and highlights the impact of submarine campaigns on Allied shipping and naval operations. Her career, though relatively short, demonstrates the effectiveness and the risks associated with undersea warfare at the time.
