Enigma (DVB)

Enigma is a Linux-based operating system primarily used in digital television (DVB) receivers, particularly satellite, cable, and terrestrial set-top boxes. It provides a graphical user interface (GUI) and a wide range of functionalities for viewing and managing digital television broadcasts.

Enigma allows users to access various features such as channel lists, electronic program guides (EPG), recording capabilities (PVR), and network connectivity. It supports a variety of DVB standards and codecs, enabling compatibility with different broadcast signals and formats.

One of the key characteristics of Enigma is its open-source nature, which has fostered a vibrant community of developers and users. This community contributes to the ongoing development, customization, and extension of the operating system through plugins, skins, and modifications. This openness allows for a high degree of personalization and functionality beyond the standard features provided by the receiver manufacturer.

Different versions of Enigma exist, typically referred to as "Enigma 1" and "Enigma 2." Enigma 2 is a complete rewrite and features a more advanced architecture and a greater range of capabilities compared to its predecessor. It is the version commonly used in newer DVB receivers.

While not a standalone television broadcasting standard, Enigma acts as the software foundation for many DVB receivers, enabling access to and control over DVB broadcasts. It should not be confused with the Enigma machine, a historical encryption device.
