Aggsbach
Aggsbach is a market town in the district of Krems-Land in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It is located in the Dunkelsteinerwald region, approximately 10 kilometers west of Krems an der Donau.
The town is most known for the Aggsbach Charterhouse (Kartause Aggsbach), a former Carthusian monastery founded in 1380. The monastery was dissolved in 1782 under Emperor Joseph II and later fell into disrepair. In the late 20th century, it was partially restored and is now a museum and event venue.
Aggsbach is also known for the Aggsbach-Markt Waterfall (Aggsbacher Wasserfall), a cascading waterfall located near the center of the town. This natural attraction draws tourists to the area.
The local economy is primarily based on tourism and agriculture. The area is known for its wine production. The municipality covers an area of 13.72 square kilometers and, as of 2020, had a population of approximately 650 inhabitants.
Historically, Aggsbach has been part of the Habsburg Monarchy. The name "Aggsbach" is derived from the brook (Bach) flowing through the area, and the settlement was likely named after its location.
