Queen's University of Belfast (UK Parliament constituency)
Queen's University of Belfast was a UK Parliament constituency returning one Member of Parliament (MP) from 1918 to 1950. It was one of the university constituencies in the United Kingdom, and was created as part of the Representation of the People Act 1918.
The constituency was specifically for graduates of Queen's University Belfast. Any graduate of the university, regardless of where they lived, was eligible to vote in the election. The system of university constituencies was intended to give a voice to educated professionals within the parliamentary system.
Elections were conducted using the single transferable vote (STV) system, a form of proportional representation. This meant voters ranked candidates in order of preference, rather than simply voting for one candidate. This system was designed to ensure a broader representation of views among the graduates.
The constituency was abolished in 1950 under the Representation of the People Act 1948, which eliminated all university constituencies in the UK.
