Prime Directive (role-playing game)

Prime Directive is a tabletop role-playing game (RPG) based on the Star Fleet Universe (SFU), which itself is derived from, but distinct from, the original Star Trek television series and related media. The game explores themes of space exploration, combat, and political intrigue within a setting that emphasizes strategic decision-making and detailed starship combat.

The core rules of Prime Directive are derived from the Star Fleet Battles tactical combat system, providing a complex and granular simulation of starship operations. Players typically assume the roles of officers aboard starships of various empires, including the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, and others.

Gameplay focuses on mission-based scenarios that can encompass exploration, diplomacy, scientific research, and, most frequently, combat engagements. Success in Prime Directive requires players to effectively manage their ship's resources, coordinate actions with their crew, and adapt to the unpredictable nature of space combat.

The game emphasizes a level of realism and detail not always found in other science fiction RPGs. This is evident in its meticulously crafted rules for ship damage, energy management, and crew performance.

Over the years, Prime Directive has been published by different companies, with Amarillo Design Bureau (ADB) being the most well-known. Various supplements have expanded the game's scope, adding new ships, scenarios, and background information about the SFU.

Although sharing thematic roots with Star Trek, the SFU, and therefore Prime Directive, has developed its own distinct history, technology, and political landscape. This independence allows for unique storylines and scenarios not constrained by the canon of the mainstream Star Trek franchise.
