Flattop

A flattop is a type of short haircut where the hair on the top of the head is cut and styled to be level, or nearly level, and usually stands up straight. The hair on the sides and back is typically cut short, often tapered, blended, or faded. The defining characteristic is the flat, horizontal plane on top of the head, creating a squared-off appearance.

The flattop achieved prominence in the United States during the 1950s and has remained a recognizable, if somewhat less common, hairstyle since then. Its popularity has fluctuated over time, with periods of resurgence.

Several variations exist, often categorized by the overall length of the hair and the steepness of the angle between the flat top and the sides. These variations include, but are not limited to:

  • Regular flattop: The basic, classic flattop with a moderate length on top.
  • High and tight: A more extreme variation where the sides and back are shaved very short, creating a stark contrast with the flat top.
  • Flat top boogie: A longer variation of the standard flattop, with more hair left on top.

The flattop is typically maintained by frequent trims to preserve the flat, level surface. Styling products, such as hair wax, gel, or pomade, are often used to help the hair stand upright and maintain its shape.
