Modruš

Modruš was a medieval Croatian county (župa) and later a feudal estate centered around the town of Modruš, located in present-day Croatia. The area historically encompassed a significant portion of the territory between Gacka, Krbava, and Vinodol.

The noble families of Gusić and later the Frankopan family held significant power in the area. The Frankopans, in particular, played a vital role in the political and economic development of Modruš.

The town of Modruš itself was a significant center of power, boasting a castle, churches, and other important structures. It served as a seat of the Frankopan dukes and was an important administrative and military center.

In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the area faced increasing threats from the Ottoman Empire. Modruš was significantly impacted by Ottoman raids and wars, which led to population displacement and economic decline. The Krbava Field Battle in 1493, a devastating defeat for the Croatian forces, had a significant impact on the region.

Over time, the importance of Modruš diminished as the center of Frankopan power shifted elsewhere and as Ottoman incursions continued. The remaining population gradually moved to more defensible locations.
