Phase 10

Phase 10 is a popular rummy-type card game created by Kenneth R. Johnson and first marketed in 1982. It is now produced by Mattel. The game is based on completing ten specific "Phases," each requiring a different combination of sets, runs, or colors of cards.

Gameplay:

The objective of Phase 10 is to be the first player to complete all ten phases. Each phase requires a player to collect a particular combination of cards, such as two sets of three, one run of seven, or seven cards of one color. Players begin each round with a hand of cards and take turns drawing and discarding cards. Once a player has the required cards for the current phase, they lay them down on the table in front of them. After a player "hits" their phase, other players can attempt to lay off cards on their phase, adding cards to existing sets or runs.

Phases:

The ten phases, in order, are:

  1. Two sets of 3
  2. One set of 3 and one run of 4
  3. One set of 4 and one run of 4
  4. One run of 7
  5. One run of 8
  6. One run of 9
  7. Two sets of 4
  8. Seven cards of one color
  9. One set of 5 and one set of 2
  10. One set of 5 and one set of 3

Card Values:

Number cards are worth 5 points each. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10 points each. Skip cards are worth 15 points each.

Winning:

The first player to complete all ten phases wins the game. If multiple players complete their final phase in the same round, the player with the lowest total score wins. Scores are tallied based on the cards remaining in each player's hand at the end of each round that they do not complete their phase.
