Amaga (flatworm)

Amaga is a genus of free-living flatworms belonging to the family Geoplanidae. These terrestrial flatworms are found predominantly in South America, with a concentration of species in Brazil and surrounding regions. They are characterized by their elongated, flattened bodies and are predatory, feeding primarily on invertebrates such as insects, earthworms, and snails.

Amaga species, like other geoplanids, lack specialized respiratory and circulatory systems. Gas exchange occurs directly through the body wall. They move using cilia on their ventral surface and by secreting a mucous slime trail.

Identification of specific Amaga species often relies on detailed morphological characteristics, including coloration patterns, body size and shape, and the internal anatomy of their reproductive systems. Taxonomic classification within the Geoplanidae, including the Amaga genus, can be complex and subject to revision as new species are discovered and phylogenetic analyses are conducted.
