Paul Williams (saxophonist)

Paul Williams (1915-1996) was an American rhythm and blues saxophonist and bandleader. He was a prominent figure in the Detroit R&B scene from the late 1940s through the 1950s and is best known for his instrumental hit "The Hucklebuck" (1949).

Williams began his career in the late 1930s playing in local bands. After serving in the military during World War II, he formed his own band, the Paul Williams Orchestra, which became a popular fixture in Detroit clubs and ballrooms. His music was characterized by a driving, danceable sound with a strong emphasis on the saxophone.

"The Hucklebuck," originally written by Andy Gibson, became Williams' signature tune and a national hit, reaching number one on the Billboard R&B chart. The song spawned numerous covers and became a popular dance craze. While he continued to record and perform throughout the 1950s, he never achieved the same level of success as "The Hucklebuck." Other notable recordings include "Thirty-Five Thirty" and "Walkin' With Paul."

In later years, Williams continued to perform locally and remained a respected figure in the Detroit music community. He passed away in 1996, leaving behind a legacy as a key contributor to the development of rhythm and blues music.
