Alcide (horse)

Alcide was a French Thoroughbred racehorse, foaled in 1955. He was a notable stayer, known for his stamina and ability to perform well over longer distances. Bred by Marcel Boussac, Alcide was trained by Alec Head and ridden primarily by Yves Saint-Martin.

His most significant victory came in the 1958 Epsom Derby, which he won decisively. He also secured victories in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and the Prix Royal-Oak (French St. Leger) that same year, solidifying his reputation as a leading three-year-old colt.

Alcide's racing career was relatively short, but he left a lasting impression due to his Derby win and success in other major European races. After retiring from racing, he became a successful stallion, siring numerous winners. His progeny inherited some of his stamina and were competitive in long-distance races. He stood at stud in France and later in Ireland.
