Ambato River (Ecuador)

The Ambato River is a river located in central Ecuador. It originates in the highlands of the Andes Mountains, primarily from the melting snow and glacial runoff of the Carihuairazo and Chimborazo volcanoes. The river flows generally eastward through the province of Tungurahua, passing near and through the city of Ambato, the provincial capital, from which it derives its name.

The Ambato River is an important source of water for irrigation and domestic use for the communities along its course. It also plays a role in hydroelectric power generation, although its contribution is relatively small compared to other major rivers in Ecuador. The river's water quality has been impacted by agricultural runoff, industrial discharge, and untreated sewage, posing challenges for environmental management and public health.

The Ambato River eventually joins the Patate River, a major tributary of the Pastaza River. The Pastaza River subsequently flows into the Amazon River basin, contributing to the overall hydrological cycle of South America. The surrounding landscape along the Ambato River varies from high-altitude paramo grasslands near its source to more temperate agricultural areas closer to the city of Ambato and its confluence with the Patate River.
