Overproof

Overproof is a term used primarily in the context of distilled spirits, particularly rum and whiskey, to denote a high alcohol by volume (ABV) content. The term originated with the British Royal Navy's practice of testing the proof of rum rations.

Originally, gunpowder was used to determine the alcohol content. A spirit was considered "proof" if, when dampened with the spirit, gunpowder would still ignite. This crude test defined "proof" as roughly equivalent to 57.15% ABV. Therefore, "overproof" indicated a spirit stronger than this threshold.

While the gunpowder method is no longer used, the term "overproof" persists. Modern usage generally indicates spirits that are significantly higher in alcohol content than standard offerings, typically above 57.15% ABV and often reaching 60% ABV or higher.

These high-proof spirits are often used in cocktails, where a small amount can add significant alcoholic punch and flavor intensity. They are also sometimes enjoyed neat or on the rocks by experienced drinkers who appreciate the concentrated flavors and higher alcohol content. However, due to their potency, overproof spirits should be handled with caution and consumed responsibly. They are often subject to specific regulations and warnings regarding their strength.
