Northavon

Northavon was a non-metropolitan district in the county of Avon, England, created on April 1, 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972. It was formed from parts of Gloucestershire and a small part of Somerset.

The district's name derived from its location north of the River Avon. The main settlements within Northavon included Yate, Thornbury, Bradley Stoke, Filton, Patchway, and Stoke Gifford. These towns and villages expanded considerably during the latter half of the 20th century due to their proximity to Bristol.

Northavon bordered the city of Bristol to the south and was largely a suburban and rural area. Its economy was linked to that of Bristol, with many residents commuting to the city for work. Key industries included aerospace, engineering, and retail.

The district council was based in Chipping Sodbury.

Northavon was abolished on April 1, 1996, as part of the 1990s UK local government reform. Its area was transferred to the newly formed unitary authority of South Gloucestershire. The name "Northavon" continues to be used informally to refer to the northern part of South Gloucestershire.
