Devils Brigade (band)
Devils Brigade is a psychobilly supergroup formed in 2002, spearheaded by Matt Freeman of Rancid. The band's sound blends punk rock, rockabilly, and horror punk influences.
History:
The Devils Brigade project began as a collaboration between Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong, also of Rancid. Freeman had written several songs that didn't fit Rancid's typical style and enlisted Armstrong's help to flesh them out. The project lay dormant for several years until Freeman revisited the material and decided to form a full band.
The initial lineup featured Freeman on lead vocals and bass, DJ Bonebrake of X on drums, and various guest guitarists. This lineup recorded the band's debut self-titled album, released in 2003 on Hellcat Records. The album featured a raw and energetic sound with a strong emphasis on upright bass and Bonebrake's signature drumming style.
Following the release of their debut, the Devils Brigade went on hiatus again as Freeman and Armstrong focused on Rancid. In 2010, the band reformed with a slightly altered lineup, adding Xavier Burgin on drums and featuring a more consistent guitarist in Nick 13 of Tiger Army. This lineup recorded and released their second album, "Danse Macabre," also on Hellcat Records. "Danse Macabre" showcased a more polished and diverse sound, incorporating elements of surf rock and even hints of mariachi music.
Style and Influences:
Devils Brigade's music is characterized by its high energy, fast tempos, and macabre themes. Lyrically, the band draws inspiration from classic horror films, pulp fiction, and tales of the supernatural. Freeman's gravelly vocals and upright bass lines are central to the band's sound, while the drumming style, whether from Bonebrake or Burgin, provides a driving and often unorthodox rhythm. The guitar work ranges from raw, punk-infused riffs to more intricate rockabilly licks.
The band's influences include artists such as The Misfits, Social Distortion, The Cramps, and various classic rockabilly musicians. Their sound has been described as a blend of punk rock attitude with a vintage horror aesthetic.
