Arthur Johnston (poet)
Arthur Johnston (1587 – 1641) was a Scottish physician and Latin poet. Born in Caskieben, Aberdeenshire, he was educated at the University of Aberdeen and subsequently studied medicine on the Continent, receiving his M.D. from the University of Padua. For many years, he practiced medicine in France before returning to Scotland around 1630.
Johnston is best remembered for his Latin verse, particularly his paraphrases of the Psalms. He produced a version of the Psalms in Latin elegiac verse that was highly regarded in his time. He was appointed physician to King Charles I and Rector of King's College, Aberdeen, positions he held until his death. His Latin poems were collected and published posthumously. His other notable works include epigrams and elegies. He is considered one of the foremost Latin poets of his era in Scotland.
