Noah's Mausoleum (Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan)

Noah's Mausoleum, also known as the Prophet Noah Mausoleum (Azerbaijani: Nuh peyğəmbərin türbəsi), is a mausoleum located in Nakhchivan City, Azerbaijan. It is believed by some to be the burial place of the biblical figure Noah. While the current structure is a relatively modern reconstruction, it is built upon the site of an ancient shrine or mausoleum considered sacred and associated with Noah.

The existing mausoleum is primarily a circular structure topped with a pointed dome. It is accessed via a stairway leading down into the crypt area. Archaeological research in the area suggests that the location has been a site of veneration for centuries, potentially dating back to pre-Christian and pre-Islamic times.

Historical accounts and local legends link the area of Nakhchivan with the story of Noah and the Great Flood. Some traditions hold that Noah's Ark landed in the vicinity of Mount Ilandag, near Nakhchivan, after the floodwaters receded. Furthermore, some believe that Noah and his family settled in the Nakhchivan region, and that he lived and died there.

The mausoleum and surrounding area are considered an important historical and religious site in Azerbaijan. It attracts pilgrims and visitors interested in the region's rich history and its connections to biblical narratives. The site is significant as a place of cultural heritage and is part of a broader historical and archaeological landscape in Nakhchivan, reflecting the region's ancient past and its ties to various religious and cultural traditions. The modern structure represents a re-establishment of the site's importance after periods of neglect.
