Mac MacLeod

Mac MacLeod is a Scottish surname derived from the Gaelic patronymic "MacLeòid," meaning "son of Leòd." Leòd is thought to be derived from the Old Norse name Ljótr, meaning "ugly" or "bright," although the interpretation of "bright" is more commonly accepted.

The MacLeods are a prominent Highland clan with two main branches: the MacLeods of Harris and Dunvegan (Sìol Tormoid) and the MacLeods of Lewis (Sìol Torquil). These branches trace their ancestry back to the 13th century. The MacLeods of Harris and Dunvegan, whose seat is Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye, are generally considered the senior branch. The MacLeods of Lewis, though initially more powerful, faced various misfortunes and ultimately lost their lands.

The clan played a significant role in Scottish history, participating in various conflicts, including the Jacobite risings. The clan motto is "Hold Fast," and their crest features a bull's head cabossed sable, horned argent, between two flags gules, staved of the second.

Notable individuals with the surname MacLeod (or variations thereof) have contributed to fields such as politics, literature, and sports. The spelling of the name can vary, including McLeod, MacLoud, and Macleod. These variations often reflect regional dialectical differences and individual family preferences.
