Reaktor
Reaktor is a modular software music studio developed by Native Instruments. It allows users to create custom virtual instruments, effects, and sound design tools. It operates on a visual programming paradigm, where users connect modules representing oscillators, filters, sequencers, and other audio processing elements to build larger, more complex systems.
Reaktor exists in two main forms: Reaktor Full, which provides complete access to its patching and programming capabilities, and Reaktor Player, a free version that allows users to run pre-built instruments and effects known as "Ensembles" but doesn't permit modifying them beyond provided macro controls.
The software is widely used by electronic musicians, sound designers, and researchers for creating unique sounds and experimenting with novel synthesis techniques. Its modularity allows for a high degree of flexibility and customization, catering to both beginners using pre-made Ensembles and advanced users who build their own instruments from scratch.
Reaktor's development history spans several versions, each introducing new modules, features, and performance improvements. Its modular nature distinguishes it from Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) as its primary focus is sound design and instrument building rather than sequencing and arrangement, although it can integrate seamlessly into DAWs as a VST or AU plugin.
