John Pierson (journalist)

John Pierson is an American independent film advocate, producer, educator, and journalist. He is best known for his long-running television show Split Screen on IFC, which highlighted independent and alternative filmmakers and film culture.

Pierson has been instrumental in launching the careers of many notable independent filmmakers, including Kevin Smith, Richard Linklater, and Harmony Korine. He served as a sales agent for their early films, helping them secure distribution deals and gain wider recognition. His involvement often went beyond simple sales representation, frequently offering advice and support during production.

Pierson's book, Spike, Mike, Slackers & Dykes: A Guided Tour Across a Decade of American Independent Cinema, details his experiences in the independent film scene from 1986 to 1996, offering insights into the challenges and triumphs of independent filmmaking during that period.

He has taught film courses at New York University (NYU) and the University of Texas at Austin, sharing his knowledge and experience with aspiring filmmakers. Pierson remains a vocal advocate for independent cinema and continues to work with and support emerging filmmakers.
