Open (Steve Hillage album)
Open is the second studio album by British guitarist Steve Hillage, released in 1975. It represents a significant departure from his work with the band Khan and showcases his developing interest in psychedelic and progressive rock, incorporating elements of jazz fusion and world music.
The album features a core band including Hillage on guitar and vocals, Miquette Giraudy (who would become a long-term collaborator) on synthesizers and vocals, and various guest musicians. Musically, Open is characterized by its atmospheric textures, extended instrumental passages, and Hillage's distinctive guitar playing, often utilizing echo and wah-wah effects.
Key tracks include the opening "Hurdy Gurdy Glissando," which features Hillage's signature "glissando guitar" technique, and the more structured "Excuse Me." The album also explores ambient soundscapes and improvisational elements.
Open is generally regarded as a pivotal album in Hillage's discography, marking a transition towards the more expansive and experimental sound that would define his later works, such as Fish Rising and Motivation Radio. It has been influential within the progressive rock and space rock genres. The album's cover art features a gatefold design with a psychedelic image.
