USS McCalla (DD-488)
USS McCalla (DD-488) was a Gleaves-class destroyer of the United States Navy. She was named for Rear Admiral Bowman H. McCalla.
The McCalla was laid down on 1 May 1941 by the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Kearny, New Jersey; launched on 17 January 1942; sponsored by Miss Eleanor McCalla; and commissioned on 27 May 1942, Commander Earl Trosino Stone in command.
During World War II, McCalla served primarily in the Pacific Theater. Her duties included escorting convoys, anti-submarine patrols, and providing fire support for amphibious landings. She participated in operations in the Solomon Islands, including the Guadalcanal Campaign and the Battle of Vella Gulf. She also saw action in the Philippines, including the Leyte landings and the Battle of Surigao Strait. McCalla earned several battle stars for her wartime service.
Following the end of World War II, McCalla continued to serve in the Navy until she was decommissioned on 15 January 1946. She was subsequently struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 28 January 1947 and sold for scrap on 18 July 1947.
