Alabama (band)

Alabama is an American country and Southern rock band formed in Fort Payne, Alabama, in 1969. Originally named Wildcountry, they became Alabama in 1977. The band's members are cousins Randy Owen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Teddy Gentry (bass guitar, vocals), and Jeff Cook (lead guitar, keyboards, vocals), and Mark Herndon (drums, percussion), who joined in 1979.

Alabama is one of the most successful country bands of all time, achieving significant mainstream success in the 1980s. Their signature sound blended country, Southern rock, and pop influences, helping to broaden the appeal of country music. They are known for their close vocal harmonies, energetic stage performances, and incorporation of electric guitars into traditional country arrangements.

The band achieved 27 number-one Billboard country singles, including hits like "Tennessee River," "Love in the First Degree," "Dixieland Delight," "Mountain Music," and "Song of the South." They have sold over 75 million records worldwide and have received numerous awards, including multiple Grammy Awards, Country Music Association Awards, and Academy of Country Music Awards.

Alabama officially retired from touring in 2003 but has since reunited for occasional performances and tours. Jeff Cook passed away in November 2022. Despite changes in the country music landscape, Alabama's legacy as a groundbreaking and influential band remains secure.
