William Carpenter (painter)

William Carpenter (1818-1899) was a British painter, primarily known for his portraiture. He was born in London and received his artistic training at the Royal Academy Schools. Carpenter exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists.

His subjects included members of the British aristocracy, clergy, and notable figures of the time. He also painted genre scenes and historical subjects, although these are less well-known than his portraits. Carpenter’s style is characterized by its meticulous detail, careful rendering of textures, and a focus on capturing the likeness and personality of his sitters. He worked primarily in oils.
