Murena (comic book)
Murena is a historical fiction comic book series created by writer Jean Dufaux and artist Philippe Delaby. Following Delaby's death in 2014, Theo Caneschi took over the art duties. The series is primarily set in ancient Rome during the reigns of emperors Claudius, Nero, and Galba.
The central character is Lucius Murena, a young Roman nobleman and son of a woman poisoned by Agrippina the Younger. He is driven by a desire for revenge against Agrippina and her son, Nero. The story weaves together historical events and figures with fictional characters and plots, offering a dramatic and often violent portrayal of Roman political intrigue, decadence, and power struggles.
The comic is noted for its meticulous historical research, detailed artwork (especially Delaby's work), and complex characters. It explores themes of ambition, corruption, love, and vengeance within the context of the Roman Empire.
The series is published by Dargaud in French. English translations have been released by Cinebook.
