If Only (TV series)
If Only is a romantic drama television series that has been produced in multiple iterations across different countries. The core concept revolves around a character who, through unforeseen circumstances, is given a second chance to relive a significant period of their life and make different choices, often to avoid a marriage they regret or to pursue a different romantic path.
The original If Only series was a Turkish production, titled Eğer Bir Bilebilsen in Turkish. This series tells the story of a woman unhappy in her marriage who suddenly finds herself transported back ten years to the eve of her wedding, allowing her the opportunity to re-evaluate her life and her choices.
A Spanish-language adaptation was produced for Netflix, also titled If Only (Spanish: Si lo hubiera sabido). This version followed a similar plot, with a woman experiencing a time slip and attempting to change the trajectory of her life. However, the Spanish If Only faced controversy and was ultimately pulled from Netflix in Turkey due to Turkish government censorship over the inclusion of a gay character, which the government deemed to be against Turkish cultural values. This cancellation triggered international debate about artistic freedom and censorship in streaming content.
Despite the controversy surrounding the Spanish adaptation, the underlying premise of If Only – the concept of reliving the past to alter the present – remains a compelling narrative theme explored in both versions of the series, and it taps into universal desires for second chances and the re-evaluation of life's pivotal decisions.
