Vision (Marvel Comics)

Vision is the name of multiple fictional characters appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The most well-known Vision is an android and a superhero.

Publication History: The original Vision was introduced in Marvel Mystery Comics #13 (November 1940), published by Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. This character was an alien from another dimension. The modern Vision, an android created by the villain Ultron, first appeared in The Avengers #57 (October 1968).

Fictional Character Biography (Android Version): The modern Vision was created by Ultron as a weapon against the Avengers. Ultron used the brain patterns of the deceased Wonder Man, Simon Williams, to give Vision a degree of humanity. However, the Vision ultimately turned against Ultron and joined the Avengers. He possesses a synthetic body composed of vibranium and advanced technology. He is powered by solar energy and has the ability to alter his density, making him intangible or incredibly durable. He can also project beams of solar energy from his forehead.

Over the years, Vision has experienced numerous storylines involving his relationships with other Avengers, particularly the Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff), whom he eventually married. They had twin sons, Wiccan and Speed, although their parentage has been retconned multiple times. Vision's history is complex, featuring periods of dismantlement, reprogramming, identity crises, and resurrections in various forms. He has been a member of several Avengers teams and has fought alongside heroes against a wide array of threats.

Powers and Abilities (Android Version):

  • Density Control: Vision can manipulate his density, allowing him to become intangible and phase through solid objects, or become incredibly dense and durable.
  • Solar Energy Projection: He can project beams of concussive force and heat from a solar energy cell located in his forehead.
  • Superhuman Strength and Durability: His synthetic body provides him with superhuman strength, stamina, and resistance to injury.
  • Flight: He can fly through the air at high speeds.
  • Regeneration: He possesses a degree of self-repair capability.
  • Genius-Level Intellect: Possessing a highly advanced artificial intelligence.

Other Versions: Besides the android Vision and the original alien Vision, there have been other characters who have taken on the name or were associated with the concept, often as alternate reality versions or related characters.

In Other Media: The Vision has appeared in numerous animated television series, video games, and films, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), where he was portrayed by Paul Bettany. His MCU incarnation features a slightly different origin story but retains many of the character's core powers and attributes. His relationship with Scarlet Witch has also been a central theme in his appearances in film and television.
