John Bennet (judge)

John Bennet was a prominent English judge and ecclesiastical lawyer during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He served as a judge of the High Court of Admiralty and as Chancellor of the Diocese of York. Bennet was knighted in 1603. His career was later overshadowed by accusations of corruption and bribery related to his role in the Admiralty Court. These allegations led to his imprisonment and substantial fines. He was eventually released but his reputation was permanently damaged. Historical sources portray him as a figure embroiled in the legal and political intrigues of his era.
