USS Columbia (CL-56)
The USS Columbia (CL-56) was a Cleveland-class light cruiser of the United States Navy. She was commissioned on July 29, 1942, and saw extensive service in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
Columbia participated in numerous campaigns and battles, earning the nickname "Gem of the Ocean." Her engagements included operations in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa. She provided vital fire support for amphibious landings and engaged in anti-aircraft defense of carrier task forces.
Notable battles and operations involving the Columbia include the Battle of Kula Gulf, the Battle of Kolombangara, and the Leyte Gulf campaign. During the Leyte Gulf campaign, she played a role in the Battle of Surigao Strait.
Columbia sustained damage from Japanese Kamikaze attacks on several occasions, particularly during the Philippines campaign. Despite the damage, she remained in service and continued to support Allied operations.
Following the end of World War II, Columbia participated in occupation duties in Japan. She was decommissioned on November 30, 1946, and placed in the reserve fleet. She was eventually sold for scrap in 1959.
