Sergei Gavrilov (politician)
Sergei Anatolyevich Gavrilov (Russian: Сергей Анатольевич Гаврилов; born January 27, 1966) is a Russian politician and a member of the State Duma. He represents the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.
Gavrilov has been a member of the State Duma since 2007, representing various constituencies. He has served on several committees and has been involved in legislative initiatives concerning economic policy, property rights, and religious matters. His political positions are generally aligned with the Communist Party platform, advocating for increased state intervention in the economy and social welfare programs.
Gavrilov gained international attention in June 2019 when, as a member of the Russian delegation, he sat in the speaker's chair of the Georgian parliament during the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy. This event triggered widespread protests in Tbilisi, Georgia, due to the ongoing tensions between Russia and Georgia stemming from the Russo-Georgian War of 2008 and the disputed territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The incident led to a political crisis in Georgia, with calls for the resignation of the Georgian government and accusations of Russian interference. Gavrilov maintained that he had acted respectfully and within the established protocol of the assembly.
