MoMA Eve

MoMA Eve refers to a significant security incident that occurred on the evening of January 27, 2023, at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. A man, identified as Gary Cabana, entered the museum and attacked two employees, stabbing them multiple times.

The incident stemmed from Cabana having been previously denied entry to the museum due to prior disruptive behavior. Following this denial, he reportedly engaged in escalating threatening posts on social media. Despite these warnings, he gained access to the museum on the evening of the attack.

The two MoMA employees, both women, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized. Cabana fled the scene following the attack, triggering a city-wide manhunt. He was apprehended in Tallahassee, Florida, several days later.

The MoMA Eve incident raised concerns about security protocols at cultural institutions and the potential for violence directed towards museum staff. It also highlighted the challenges of monitoring and responding to online threats in the real world. The museum temporarily closed following the incident to review its security measures.
