Bévilard

Bévilard is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern, Switzerland.

Geography

Bévilard is located in the valley of the Gabiare, a tributary of the Birs. The municipality is situated between the towns of Moutier and Biel/Bienne. The landscape is characterised by rolling hills and forests, typical of the Jura region.

History

The village has a long history, with evidence of settlement dating back to Roman times. Bévilard was historically part of the seigniory of Erguel, which was later absorbed into the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. During the French Revolution, Bévilard was briefly part of France. In 1815, it became part of the canton of Bern.

Demographics

The population of Bévilard is primarily French-speaking. The religious affiliation is predominantly Reformed (Protestant).

Economy

Traditionally, Bévilard was an agricultural village. In recent decades, it has developed into a residential community for people working in nearby industrial centers such as Biel/Bienne. Small businesses and industries are also located in the municipality.

Transportation

Bévilard is well connected to the regional transportation network. The main road between Moutier and Biel/Bienne passes through the village. The municipality also has a railway station on the Biel/Bienne-Delémont line.
