Ushizuka Kofun (Mibu)

The Ushizuka Kofun is a keyhole-shaped kofun (tumulus) located in Mibu Town, Shimotsuga District, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It dates to the late Kofun period (approximately the 6th century CE). It is designated as a Tochigi Prefecture Historic Site.

The kofun is characterized by its relatively large size for the region, suggesting the burial of a powerful local figure. The mound measures approximately 70 meters in total length, with a circular rear portion and a rectangular front portion. The surface of the mound was originally covered with fukiishi (covering stones).

Excavations have revealed various burial goods, including haniwa (terracotta figures), Sue ware pottery, and metal artifacts. These findings provide valuable insights into the burial customs and material culture of the Kofun period in the northern Kanto region. The recovered haniwa are particularly noteworthy, displaying characteristics typical of the late Kofun period.

The Ushizuka Kofun contributes significantly to the understanding of the local power structures and cultural exchanges that occurred during the Kofun period in the Mibu area. Its preservation and study continue to inform researchers about the history of Tochigi Prefecture and the broader cultural landscape of ancient Japan.
