HMS Revenge (1892)

HMS Revenge was a Royal Navy battleship of the Royal Sovereign-class, launched in 1892. She was one of eight ships in the class, which represented a significant advance in British battleship design.

Revenge was built by Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company in Jarrow. Her main armament consisted of four 13.5-inch breech-loading guns mounted in two twin barbettes, one forward and one aft. She also carried ten 6-inch quick-firing guns as a secondary battery, along with numerous smaller guns for close-range defence.

She served in various roles throughout her career, including service with the Channel Fleet, the Home Fleet, and the Atlantic Fleet.

During World War I, Revenge saw action at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. Despite being an older battleship, she performed well, firing accurately and contributing to the Allied victory. She sustained some damage during the battle but remained operational.

After the war, Revenge continued to serve in the Royal Navy. In the 1920s, she was converted to a training ship and renamed Redoubtable. She was eventually sold for scrap in 1948, marking the end of her long and distinguished career.

The Royal Sovereign-class battleships, including Revenge, were important ships in the development of naval technology and tactics. They represented a move towards larger, more powerful battleships and played a significant role in maintaining British naval supremacy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
