McAuliffe (crater)

McAuliffe is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the southwest of the larger crater Sarton, and northeast of Gernsback.

The crater is relatively young and well-defined, with a sharp rim and a relatively flat interior. There is some terracing visible along the inner walls. A small, bowl-shaped crater lies across the southern rim of McAuliffe. A few tiny craterlets are scattered across the interior floor.

McAuliffe is named after Christa McAuliffe, an American teacher and astronaut who died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. A number of other craters in the vicinity are also named after the Challenger crew.
