Henry Bright (schoolmaster, born 1724)
Henry Bright (1724-1787) was an English schoolmaster, known for his long tenure as headmaster of Abingdon School in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire).
Born in 1724, Bright was educated at Abingdon School itself, later matriculating at Pembroke College, Oxford in 1741. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1745 and his Master of Arts degree in 1747.
Bright became headmaster of Abingdon School in 1748, a position he held for nearly four decades until his death in 1787. During his time as headmaster, he oversaw a period of stability and growth for the school. Records suggest a focus on classical education, typical for grammar schools of the era. While detailed information about his specific pedagogical methods is limited, surviving records indicate a well-structured curriculum centered on Latin and Greek.
He also served as the vicar of Radley, near Abingdon.
Bright's lasting contribution lies in his sustained leadership of Abingdon School during a pivotal period in its history. Although his personal papers and extensive records of his headmastership are scarce, his longevity in the role signifies a dedication to the school and its students. He is buried at St Helen's Church, Abingdon.
